A Parent’s Look at Pediatric Eye Care at Eye Exams

Your child’s first eye exam should be a breeze—not a battle. At Eye Exams, we know that when kids feel safe and supported, exams go smoothly, and parents leave confident. Families in Frisco and Fairview, [tokens name='state'], count on us for clear communication, kid-friendly testing, and advanced technology that skips the stress of traditional methods.

Whether it’s your child’s first exam or a yearly check-in, knowing what to expect can help you prepare—and help them feel at ease.

A Step-by-Step Look at the Pediatric Exam

We’ve designed every part of the visit with children in mind. Here’s what a typical pediatric exam looks like at Eye Exams:

  1. Visual Acuity Check: We start by testing how well your child sees both near and far.
  2. Eye Pressure Test: A quick, gentle check to rule out early signs of glaucoma.
  3. Muscle Coordination Screening: This ensures your child’s eyes are working together when shifting focus from near to far.
  4. Lens Testing: Using a phoropter, we determine if a prescription is needed for clearer vision.
  5. Slit Lamp Evaluation: A closer look at the front of the eye helps confirm overall eye health.
  6. Retinal Imaging with Optos: Instead of using dilating eye drops, we capture a clear digital photo of the retina—no discomfort, no downtime.

As Dr. Buthod explains, “You don’t have to worry about any side effects. We can get a clear picture of the inside of the eye without any drops.”

Age-Appropriate Testing—No Letters Needed

If your child doesn’t know the alphabet yet, that’s okay! We use pictogram charts with simple images like hearts or houses, so children of all ages can participate in the exam without needing reading skills.

Support for Every Parent

We encourage parents to stay in the exam room—but we also know that some kids listen better when they’re on their own. If needed, we may ask you to step just outside to help your child focus and cooperate.

Exams typically take about 30 minutes. If we do need to dilate the eyes (rare, thanks to our imaging technology), the effects last 3–6 hours, but your child can return to school or daycare afterward without issue.

Glasses or Results? You’ll Leave With Both

By the end of your visit, you’ll have your child’s prescription in hand. If glasses are needed, you can explore frames right on-site—making it easy to complete your visit in one stop.
